Tooth Friendly Summer Treats

Tooth Friendly Summer Treats | Schaumburg

When we think of summer, images of ice cream cones and refreshing iced tea dance in our heads. Unfortunately, most of our favourite summer treats are high in acid and likely to stain teeth enamel. Here are four healthy snacks and beverages that you can enjoy all summer long and won’t regret come fall.

Frozen Grapes

If you haven’t experienced the wonder that is frozen grapes, you are seriously missing out. This tasty treat is so simple and refreshing that, as soon as you try it, you’ll be screaming its praises from the rooftops. To prepare, simply remove the grapes from the vine, place them in a bowl, and pop them in the freezer. Due to their chemical composition, they do not freeze all the way through and, instead, have the consistency of ice cream.

Banana Ice Cream

Banana ice cream is somewhat new to the health food scene. This nutritious treat is simple to make and very good for you and your teeth. To make, take 2-3 ripe bananas, remove the peel and cut into small to medium pieces. Place into a bowl and freeze overnight. The next day, or when you want to enjoy this tasty treat, remove the bananas from the freezer and put them into a food processor. Blend until smooth and enjoy!

Tip: For chocolate banana ice cream, just add a bit of cocoa powder!

Real Fruit Popsicles

Kids and adults alike love popsicles in the summer heat, but most brands include high fructose corn syrup and artificial colouring – aka things that are not great for your teeth. These real fruit popsicles are just as colourful and flavorful without all the added sugar and other harmful ingredients. To make, take a plastic cup and place fruit slices along the walls. Fill with water, place a slice of lemon on the top of the cup and poke a wooden stick through the lemon and into the water. Freeze overnight and enjoy.

Min And Lemon Infused Water

Summer drinks are full of sugar and artificial flavouring. For a refreshing, fun summer drink that won’t harm your teeth, try infusing your water with some natural flavouring. Our favourite combination is mint and lemon. To infuse water, simply fill a pitcher with water and mix in slices of your favourite fruits and/or herbs. Leave the pitcher in the fridge overnight and enjoy the next day. There are thousands of flavour combinations – feel free to experiment until you find one you love.
